The first few weeks of ABA provide different kinds of information, so the things you look out for & the questions you ask should change as treatment progresses.
At around 30 days, focus primarily on adjustment. Ask how your child is responding to sessions, what they seem to enjoy, which situations are difficult, and what the team has learned about how best to work with them. This is also a good time to ask whether anything discovered during the first sessions has changed the original treatment plan.
Around 60 days, begin asking about patterns. Which goals are progressing? Which ones are taking longer than expected? Are certain situations consistently associated with challenging behavior? Are any skills starting to show up outside structured teaching? Your BCBA may also be ready to identify things that would be useful for you to practice at home.
By around 90 days, zoom out. Ask what meaningful changes the team has observed, whether the current goals still seem like the right priorities, what is not working as expected, and what the next few months should focus on. This is also a useful time to make sure the things that matter to your family are actually represented in treatment.
